Turbine Details : Combined Cycle Power Plants : Combination of Gas and Steam Cycles More Electricity from Gas and Steam Traditionally, the advantages of the fast start-up capability of gas turbines has been utilized throughout the world. A gas turbine power plant can supply the grid with electric power within minutes after start-up, whereas steam turbine power plants require several hours. If the power demand increases above a certain limit for a short period during the day, one of the solutions adopted by utilities is to connect gas turbines to the grid during these "peak-load" periods. Such gas turbine power plants operate very cost-effectively for these short periods of time. In a fully fired combined-cycle block, the gas turbine exhaust gas is used as combustion air for the steam generator in a conventional power plant, thereby enhancing station efficiency. All combined gas and steam cycles are suitable for the extraction of low-temperature steam from the steam turbine. The thermal energy in the gas turbine exhaust can likewise be used directly via a heat exchanger. There is a particularly high demand for the supply of distinct heating to urban area and process heat for industry. |
